Personally, I would like to see this a lot more interactive. As it is, too much time goes by between back and forth to really be able to tune a conversation. There's some software I know of that allows participants to add topics, comment on threads and even vote. Unfortunately, it requires a Linux server with postgres and apache installed, and I don't have access to such a machine myself.
The effect I see is that we try to stuff as much as possible into a message, knowing the infrequency of digests appearing, and it becomes a bit overly- formalized as statements of position. And I too, don't lay this problem at Fran's feet: it's good that he's provided any kind of venue for this type of discussion. It's just a bit frustrating.
